Readroll support

Readroll is a teleprompter for iPhone and iPad that scrolls your script as you speak. It listens with on-device speech recognition, keeps the text in step with your voice, and can record video while you read. Everything stays on your device.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Readroll ask for microphone permission?

The microphone is how Readroll follows your voice: it listens to what you say and scrolls the script to match. It is also used to record the sound of a video you start. Without microphone access the prompter cannot follow you. If you declined the prompt, you can grant it later in Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone › Readroll.

Why does it also ask for speech recognition and camera permission?

iOS asks separately for speech recognition, which is what turns your voice into text so the prompter can track your place in the script. Recognition runs on your device and nothing is sent to Virtia. Camera permission is requested only when you first record a video; if you never record, Readroll never needs the camera. Both can be changed in Settings › Privacy & Security.

Which languages does voice-following support?

Readroll uses Apple's on-device Speech framework and supports the languages iOS offers for on-device speech recognition. The exact set depends on your device and iOS version and grows as Apple adds languages. Write your script in a language iOS can recognise on the device and speak it in that language for the best tracking.

Does Readroll need an internet connection?

No. There is no account and no server. Speech recognition runs on the device, so the prompter works in airplane mode.

Where are my recordings stored?

Recordings are saved inside the app's own storage on your iPhone or iPad. They are not uploaded anywhere and are not visible to Virtia. They stay there until you delete them or delete the app, so export anything you want to keep before removing Readroll.

How do I export a recording?

Open a recording in Readroll and use the share action. The iOS share sheet lets you save the video to Photos, save it to Files, send it with AirDrop or Messages, or hand it to any other app that accepts video. Nothing is exported until you choose a destination.

How do I get a script into Readroll?

Type it in the app, or copy it from any other app and tap Paste in Readroll. The app reads the clipboard only when you tap Paste.

Does Readroll collect any data?

No. Scripts, settings, recordings, audio and transcripts stay on your device, and the app has no analytics, advertising or third-party SDKs. The privacy policy has the details.
